Rick Foris was born in 1952 in Amherst, Wisconsin. He studied sculpture at the University of Wisconsin, obtaining his BFA in Art in 1974. He studied Aztec and Mayan sculpture, as well as Oriental tea vessels and Russian minarets to develop his own concepts. Foris became known for wheel-thrown raku-fired sculptural constructions, often based on a vessel form and incorporating hand built elements including a base or plinth, handles, and finials. The post-firing cold application of acrylic paints creates bold patterns and color contrasts, along with stamping and carvings. He has won awards at numerous craft fairs and arts festivals throughout the Midwest, and has public collections of his work in museums around the country, including the American Museum of Ceramic Art in Pomona, California, the Byer Museum of the Arts in Evanston, Illinois, and at Stetson University in Deland, Florida. He continues to work from his home studio in Wisconsin.
