Richard Earl Safro (December 5, 1940 – November 5, 2025) was a multi-talented American artist, craftsman, and prominent figure in the Tampa Bay creative community. Born in Minneapolis, Minnesota, he spent much of his early adulthood working as an upholstery supervisor in Hammond, Indiana, before relocating to St. Petersburg, Florida in 1977. Settling in his beautifully curated home and tropical garden estate, which he fondly named “Pompeii,” Safro channelled his passion for nature, folklore, and classical aesthetics into hand-carved, kiln-fired ceramic sculptures and sketch art. Beyond creating his own intricate green-glazed masks and mythological wall hangings, he spent decades heavily involved in the regional art scene, becoming a beloved, highly sought-after professional art model for major Florida institutions like the Morean Arts Center and the Dunedin Fine Art Center.
