Richard Parkes Bonington (25 October 1802–23 September 1828) was an English Romantic painter renowned for his luminous watercolors and atmospheric oil landscapes, which profoundly influenced both British and French art in the early 19th century. Born in Arnold near Nottingham, he moved to France as a teenager and studied in Paris under Antoine-Jean Gros, where he befriended Eugène Delacroix. Bonington became known for his distinctive ability to capture light, broad skies, and coastal or architectural vistas with a fluid, spontaneous touch that blended English watercolor traditions with continental Romanticism. His rapid rise included exhibiting at the Paris Salon beginning in 1822 and earning a gold medal in 1824. Although he died of tuberculosis at just 25, his innovative style and cross-cultural impact left a lasting and influential legacy in European landscape painting.
