Richard Mann (1940–1990) was an Australian-born painter, poet, playwright, and minister who became deeply integrated into the artistic life of Harlem after moving to New York City. Influenced by Surrealism, Abstract Expressionism, and calligraphy, he developed a unique style that infused bold visual abstraction with spiritual concerns and social commentary. His later works frequently featured layered, partially illegible text that mirrored the urban decay and heavily tagged graffiti walls of the city.
