Richard Hunt (B. 1951) Canadian Serigraph. Titled "Red Snapper" Limited Edition 102/150. Dated 90. Pencil Signed, Dated & Edition.

The chief carver at Thunderbird Park in Victoria, British Columbia, Canada, Richard Hunt is part of a family tradition of carving works devoted to the revival of traditional Northwest Coast artwork.

His grandfather, Mungo Martin, was one of the last living carvers of Kwa-giulth tribe of northern Vancouver Island, and founder of the program at Thunderbird Park. Then his son Henry, Richard's father, took over. Of this lineage, Richard says: "My father promised my grandfather that one of us from the village would always be there."

Richard Hunt grew up in Victoria in a family of 13 children and was the first member of his family to finish high school. In his youth, he crafted small boats and masks and also excelled in soccer, football, and basketball. In school, he was encouraged by a teacher who respected his culture and allowed him to spend school time working with his father.

Today Hunt is one of the country's most distinguished totem carvers with poles in Canada, the United States, Europe, and Asia. His 24-foot high, 7-foot wide pole in Duncan, British Columbia is the widest totem pole in the world. The Peabody Museum of Natural History at Yale commissioned him to carve a sea monster mask and monumental carving of a killer whale and a thunderbird are installed at Vancouver International Airport.
