Richard Carter was born in New Jersey in 1946. He grew up in a culturally affluent household, and graduated from Villanova University in Pennsylvania with a Bachelors in Social Science.  During his final year he became interested in art, teaching himself how to paint, and in 1971 he traveled to the Roaring Fork Valley region of Colorado to work as an assistant to the former Bauhaus master Herbert Bayer at his Red Mountain studio. He spent the next seven years there improving his skills in painting, sculpture, printmaking, tapestry design, exhibition design, and studying how to create environmental works and architectural projects. In 1976 he worked with two other Aspen artists to convert the Holy Cross Power House into the Aspen Center for Visual Arts, now known as the Aspen Art Museum. He spent five years on their board as an inaugural member, and began to host solo and group shows there before starting national tours in 1979. In 1984 Carter began working as a Production Designer on commercial and feature film shoots in locations around the world, which resulted in his opening a second studio and base of operations in Los Angeles. This location remained open until 2018, and he consolidated all his work into a new studio in Basalt, Colorado. Represented at numerous galleries throughout the Pacific Northwest and the Southwest, his pieces are highly sought after for their minimalist themes on a grand scale, with corporate, private, and public collections around the world.
