Richard Amsel (December 4, 1947-November 13, 1985) was an American illustrator and graphic artist renowned for his film posters, album covers, and magazine illustrations. Born in Philadelphia, he began drawing at age five and later studied at the Philadelphia College of Art. His early talent brought him national attention when his proposed poster for Hello, Dolly! was selected by 20th Century Fox. Amsel became especially known for his film posters in the 1970s, including iconic works for Chinatown, The Last Picture Show, The Sting, Flash Gordon, The Dark Crystal, and Raiders of the Lost Ark. He also created over 40 covers for TV Guide, along with portraits of celebrities such as Lily Tomlin, Lucille Ball, Clark Gable, and Vivien Leigh. Amsel received numerous accolades, including awards from the New York and Los Angeles Society of Illustrators, a Golden Key Award from Hollywood Reporter, a Grammy Award, and multiple Hall of Fame inductions. Despite his commercial success, he was critical of the medium of poster art. His last film poster was for Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome, and his final artwork appeared on a TV Guide cover shortly before his death from complications of AIDS. His work remains influential in graphic design, illustration, and film marketing.
