This is a re strike of Rembrandt's "The Windmill", an etching which was originally done in 1641. The re strike is signed and dated by Rembrandt in the plate in the lower right, it is partially stamped "Reichs Drucke" in the lower right corner, it has a round stamp on the backside which says it is a facsimile reproduction made by the Reichs Druckerei in Berlin, and it is unframed. Rembrandt (1606 - 1669) needs no introduction. He was one of Europe's greatest artists and painters of the 1600's and has world-wide renown, and he was fascinated with windmills and their singular contribution to the landscape of Holland. A restrike is an impression made from the plate after the original edition or issue has been completed, and after Rembrandt died in 1669, many publishers and printers continued to produce authorized prints from the artist's plates. Such prints are also called "posthumous impressions". The Reichsdruckerei was a German printing house in Berlin which operated from 1879 to 1910 and was a German institution in Berlin under the management of the Reich Post Office. Its main activity was the production of Reich treasury notes, banknotes, postage stamps, and monetary papers. It also printed official works, including patent documents. The outside margins measure 11 x 7 1/4 in. wide and the image itself measures 8 1/4 x 5 5/8 in. wide. There are faint brown spots in the margins and at the top edges of the plate, the corner with the German stamp in the lower right is torn, and still an attractive piece by Rembrandt. An original etching with this title sold at auction in 2011 for $28,000 (Shannon's Fine Art Auction) and for £98,000 at Christie's in 2016, so for a bargain basement price, you too can own a Rembrandt and hang it up on your walls. #5102 Location U4
