Founded in Taunton, Massachusetts, in 1824 as Babbitt & Crossman, the silversmithing firm was acquired a decade later by Henry Reed and Charles Barton to become Reed & Barton. Renowned for its fine sterling silver and silverplate craftsmanship, the company produced weapons for the Union Army during the Civil War, White House tableware, and the official medals for the 1996 Summer Olympics. Following a Chapter 11 bankruptcy filing in 2015, Reed & Barton's assets were acquired by competing tableware maker The Lenox Company.
