Recollections of the Peninsula, Sherer 1825. This book is about the British army fighting against Napoleon in Portugal and Spain between 1809 and 1814. The title is “Recollections of the Peninsula”, and it is the Fourth Edition, printed in London for Longman, Hurst, Rees, Orme, Brown, And Green at Paternoster-Row in 1825 and printed by A. & R. Spottiswoode at New-Street-Square in London. The book is 3/4 bound, with five raised bands, six compartments with a gilt title, horizontal gilt bands and incised floral devices on the spine, polished brown boards, blank endpapers with the bookplate of “Douglas” on the front paste-down, a one-page Preface, followed by 358 pages of text. The author is Capt. Joseph Moyle Sherer (1789 - 1869), who fought in the Peninsula Campaign under the command of the Duke of Wellington. Sherer was a member of the 34th Border regiment of the British army, and the book describes day-to-day military life with the border regiment as part of the campaigns of the British army in Portugal and Spain against Napoleon’s army between 1809 and 1814. In 1813 Sherer was taken prisoner at the pass of Maya in Portugal and sent to France to spend the next two years in captivity. He also wrote “Scenes and Impressions in Egypt and in Italy” in 1824, and he wrote “Religio Militis; or, Christianity For the Camp” in 1827, where he tried to spread religion across the military. The book is 8vo. and measures 9 x 5 1/2 in. wide, the binding is tight and the pages are and text are very clean, with offset from the bookplate on the front flyleaf, just a couple of brown spots in the margins near the beginning of the book and near the endpapers at the rear, light rubbing on the edges of the spines, and a bruise on the leather in the top right corner of the front board. Otherwise a handsome copy of this interesting history of the British campaign against Napoleon in the Iberian Peninsula. #182 #1627
