Rare Antique Monumental Busk Scrimshaw. Incredible hand-carved and decorated piece, with visuals of a ship at sea, a majestic bird on an American shield, a banner with the word "JANNUS" (likely the vessel the carver was on), and more.
Size: 22 x 2 1/2 x 1 in.
A busk scrimshaw is a beautiful piece of 19th Century American folk art, featuring engravings on a whalebone or baleen stiffener (busk) for a woman's corset, often made by whalers as intimate love tokens for their sweethearts, depicting whaling scenes, homes, hearts, or patriotic symbols. These decorative, flat objects were inserted into a corset's front pocket, carrying messages of love and maritime life, and are highly collectible today, found in museums like the Smithsonian.
