Founded in 1795 by industrialist John Rose in Ironbridge Gorge, Shropshire, Coalport Porcelain Works grew to become one of the premier names in English ceramic history, particularly after developing a brilliant leadless glaze that dramatically improved worker safety.  Throughout the 19th Century Coalport specialized in highly elaborate, lavishly decorated bone china and was known for their “Indian Tree” and Greek key patterns. They emulated prestigious continental styles like French Sèvres and German Meissen, winning a gold medal at the Great Exhibition of 1851 for their striking “Rose Pompadour” pink enamel, and became famous for its intricate, three-dimensional “Coalbrookdale” floral encrustations and delicate enamel “jewelling” techniques.  Following financial hardships in the early 20th Century, production was permanently relocated to the traditional pottery hub of Stoke-on-Trent in 1926, and after a rough interwar and post-War period the brand was eventually absorbed into the Wedgwood Group in 1967, with the original Shropshire workshop now preserved as the Coalport China Museum.
