Randolph Caldecott (1846–1886) was an English artist and illustrator whose lively, imaginative drawings transformed the world of children's books. Best known for illustrating classic nursery rhymes and stories such as The House That Jack Built and The Diverting History of John Gilpin, Caldecott brought humor, movement, and expressive characters to every page. His innovative style, in which the illustrations worked closely with the text to tell the story, had a lasting influence on picture book design and children's literature. In recognition of his enduring legacy, the prestigious Caldecott Medal, awarded annually to the artist of the most distinguished American picture book for children, was named in his honor.
