After beginning his career decorating antique furniture with his wife, fellow artist Martha Cahoon, he transitioned to easel painting in the 1950s and developed a distinctive style filled with vivid colors, playful fantasy, and maritime charm. His imaginative works, often featuring mermaids riding whales, hot-air balloons, and picturesque seaside villages, captured the nostalgia and romance of coastal life. Today, Cahoon's paintings are highly sought after by collectors, and his artistic legacy is preserved through the Cahoon Museum of American Art in Cotuit, Massachusetts.
