Rafael Coronel (1931–2019) was a Mexican painter known for his haunting, highly expressive portraits and figurative compositions, often populated by elongated, introspective figures with a distinctive sense of melancholy and mystery. Born in Zacatecas, Mexico, Coronel studied at La Esmeralda in Mexico City and emerged as an important figure of the postwar Mexican art scene, while developing a style distinct from the traditional Mexican muralist movement. His work drew upon Renaissance and Baroque painting, Mexican popular culture, religious imagery, and the psychological intensity of the human face. He exhibited extensively in Mexico and internationally, and his work is held in major museums and collections. In his later years, Coronel returned to his native Zacatecas, where the Museo Rafael Coronel, housed in the former Convent of San Francisco, was established to display his work and his extensive collection of masks and folk art.
