Rudolph Carl Gorman (1931-2005) was a pivotal Navajo artist widely regarded as the “Picasso of American Indian Art,” born into a family of artists in Chinle, Arizona and raised in a traditional Navajo hogan, with his early artistic endeavors drawing on rocks and mud while herding sheep. After serving in the U.S. Navy, Gorman received the first-ever scholarship from the Navajo Tribal Council to study art in Mexico, where he was heavily influenced by the work of Diego Rivera. One of the first openly gay Native American artists, his career spanned over four decades with his first public exhibition in 1963, and he was celebrated for his distinctive paintings and lithographs of Navajo women, which were characterized by their fluid lines, bold colors, and an emphasis on the grace and dignity of his subjects. In 1968 Gorman founded the Navajo Gallery in Taos, New Mexico, the first Native American-owned art gallery in the United States, paving the way for future indigenous artists. A prolific artist, he created more than 500 lithographs, numerous sculptures, and countless oil paintings, and was also a noted philanthropist and author, penning cookbooks like “Nudes and Food,” with his drawings and works still on display in museums worldwide.
