R. C. Gorman (1931–2005) was a celebrated Navajo painter, sculptor, and printmaker often referred to as the "Picasso of American Indian Art." Born in Chinle, Arizona, he gained international renown for his expressive, lyrical depictions of Navajo women rendered in flowing forms and rich earth tones. In 1968, he established the Navajo Gallery in Taos, New Mexico—the first Native American–owned fine art gallery—paving the way for contemporary Native art on the global stage.
