Qiu Deshu (b. 1948, Shanghai, China) is a contemporary Chinese painter and printmaker renowned for his innovative contributions to modern ink painting. A graduate of the Shanghai Academy of Fine Arts, Qiu emerged as a leading figure in the “No Name Group,” an avant-garde collective that challenged conventional Chinese artistic traditions in the 1970s. He is best known for his “Fissure” series, which combines abstract ink textures with sculptural, layered surfaces, exploring the tension between chance, control, and natural forms. Qiu’s work bridges traditional Chinese materials and techniques with experimental, contemporary approaches, earning him international recognition through exhibitions in Asia, Europe, and the United States, and securing his place as a pivotal figure in China’s post–Cultural Revolution art scene.
