A massive fossilized tibia bone from a gomphothere, an extinct four-footed mammal that roamed North America 12,000 to 2.6 million years ago. The gomphothere looked like an elephant, but had four tusks and did not belong to the elephant family. It was in the proboscis family and stood about ten feet tall, weighed 4 to 5 tons, and was a herbivore that lived near lakes in dry wooded regions. The bone came from the hind legs of the animal and was found in Venice, Florida, and similar bones have been found in Kansas and Tennessee. Scientists believe the animal evolved from Africa and crossed into Europe and Asia when sea levels dropped around the world. The overall size is 25 1/4 x 8 1/4 in. wide and weighs 18 1/4 pounds.
