Pre-Columbian Middle Mayan Miniature Figural Earthenware Chocolate Drinking Cup. Likely made in the area now known as Honduras some time between 200 BC and 200 AD, this piece likely lost all its polychrome decorations long ago. Essentially an ancient shot glass, the mixture of water, pepper, cocoa bean, and other additives would be poured into the piece and consumed in one draught for stamina, longevity, and to prepare for a battle. The figure itself, a squat humanoid form, was probably made to represent its owner (or maker), rather than a zoomorphic or other abstract shape, indicating the stature of the owner and his place in Mayan society.
