Established in 1744 by Dmitry Vinogradov, the Imperial Porcelain Factory in Saint Petersburg was the first porcelain manufactory in Russia. Supported by the Romanov Tsars, the factory initially produced exclusive wares for the imperial court and high-level diplomatic gifts. During the 18th and 19th Centuries, it became famous for its large, ornate vases and unique figurines depicting the diverse ethnic groups of the Russian Empire. Despite facing potential closure in the late 1800s, Alexander III revitalized the firm, ensuring it maintained the highest technological and artistic standards. Following the Russian Revolution, the Bolsheviks renamed it the State Porcelain Factory, later calling it the Lomonosov Porcelain Factory during the Soviet era. Today, the factory is widely recognized for its iconic cobalt net pattern, a trademark style introduced in 1949, and is still frequently referred to as Lomonosov, despite having reverted to the name Imperial Porcelain Manufactory in 2005 to acknowledge the fall of the Soviet Union.
