Porfirio Salinas (1910–1973) was a pioneering Mexican American Texas artist best known for his luminous impressionist landscapes of the Texas Hill Country, particularly fields of bluebonnets, live oaks, prickly pear, and rolling spring hills. Born near Bastrop, Texas, and largely self-taught, Salinas developed his skills under the influence of landscape painters Robert William Wood and José Arpa. He began painting professionally in 1930 and became one of Texas’s most beloved landscape artists, eventually earning a national following through his association with President Lyndon B. Johnson, who collected and prominently displayed his work. Salinas’s paintings celebrate the distinctive beauty of the Texas landscape while reflecting the deep cultural connection between Texas and its Mexican American heritage
