Piotr Sierakowski was born in Warsaw, Poland in 1957. He graduated in 1981 from l’Ecole d’Architecture et des Arts Visuels La Cambre in Brussels. He then emigrated to the United States, where he became the manager of the Koch+Lowy Inc. design office in New York City. His initial focus was on mobile lighting and its integration into architecture, embracing brutalist and modernist designs that often hid the lighting in unusual places. In the late 1980s he worked for several other stores throughout the United States, designing showrooms and creating interior architecture for new companies. When founder Ernest Lowy passed away in 1993 the company was sold, and Sierakowski returned to Europe, living first in Milan to study metal and glassworking and then settling in the south of France, where he began teaching at Bordeaux’s Fine Arts Academy. His inspirations shifted significantly during this period, as he began to incorporate more abstract and Op-Art motifs into his designs. In 2002 he moved to a new home studio in Rome, where he continues to produce unique, one-of-a-kind, handmade pieces of furniture on a commission-only basis. Since 2004 there have been numerous retrospective exhibitions of his work, including at the Centre for Contemporary Art in Warsaw and the Museum of Arts and Design in New York.
