Pierre-Auguste Renoir (1841–1919) was one of the leading figures of French Impressionism and one of the most celebrated painters of the 19th century. Born in Limoges, France, Renoir studied at the École des Beaux-Arts and worked alongside artists such as Claude Monet, Edgar Degas, and Alfred Sisley in developing the Impressionist movement. He became renowned for his luminous paintings of modern life, including portraits, intimate domestic scenes, landscapes, gardens, and celebrations of leisure, characterized by vibrant color, soft brushwork, and a fascination with light and human warmth. In later years, Renoir moved toward a more classical style, creating richly colored figures and nudes despite suffering from severe rheumatoid arthritis. His extensive body of work helped define the beauty and optimism of Impressionism, and his paintings remain among the most admired and influential in the history of Western art.
