Piero Fornasetti (1913–1988) was an Italian artist, designer, and decorator renowned for his distinctive, whimsical visual language. Born in Milan, he worked across painting, ceramics, furniture, textiles, and interior design, creating richly ornamented objects inspired by classical architecture, mythology, engraving, and Renaissance imagery. His most recognizable motif was the enigmatic face of Italian opera singer Lina Cavalieri, which he transformed into hundreds of variations on plates, trays, furniture, and decorative objects. Fornasetti’s imaginative combinations of historic imagery and Surrealist wit made his work a distinctive contribution to 20th-century Italian design, and his Milanese workshop continues to produce pieces based on his designs.
