Phyllis Kapp (Born 1930) 1985 American, Oil on Canvas Painting of Native American Pottery Sellers. Rare large oil on canvas.
Phyllis Kapp, born in 1930 in a Jewish immigrant neighborhood of Chicago, is a celebrated artist known for her vibrant and expressive watercolor landscapes inspired by the beauty of northern New Mexico. Her artistic journey began in childhood and has spanned decades, encompassing not only painting but also explorations in ceramics and a significant career as a respected gallerist. As a first-generation American, her early creative experiences took place in her childhood "hideout" under the family dining table. She pursued her passion for art through formal studies in Chicago and on the West Coast, alongside studies in biology. Even while raising a family and living in various locations, painting remained a constant and vital part of her life. Mentorship from German-born artist Paul Wieghardt proved influential in developing her artistic voice.
In the mid-1980s, Kapp relocated to Santa Fe, New Mexico, a place that deeply resonated with her and became the primary inspiration for her art. There, she established the Waxlander Gallery in 1985, which she successfully ran for 33 years, dedicated to showcasing and supporting the work of other artists alongside her own.
Since closing her gallery, Kapp has focused wholeheartedly on her painting. Her "expressionist landscapes" capture the essence of the mountains, land, and sky of the Southwest through a rich palette and an abstract lens. Often finding inspiration in music, the titles of her works reflect a deep connection to rhythm and emotion. Kapp's art is described as energetic and uplifting, bringing joy and refreshment to those who view it. Currently represented by Pippin Contemporary in Santa Fe, Phyllis Kapp continues to create, explore new mediums like glass, and find inspiration in the world around her.
