Philippe Mohlitz (1941–2019) was a French engraver, draughtsman, sculptor, and printmaker widely regarded as one of the most technically masterful and imaginative engravers of his generation. Born Émile-Philippe Magaudoux in Saint-André-de-Cubzac near Bordeaux, he moved to Paris in 1965 to study engraving under Jean Delpech, and began producing copperplate engravings and etchings that same year. Known for his exquisite command of the burin and drypoint, Mohlitz revived and reinterpreted traditional engraving techniques — delivering images rich in detail, depth, and often tinged with surreal, fantastic or dreamlike atmospheres. Over a career spanning more than four decades, he exhibited internationally, illustrated books, and won major awards including the Florence Gould Prize (1971) and the Grand Prix Léon‑Georges Baudry for engraving from the Taylor Foundation (2000). His prints — often featuring uncanny architecture, strange machines, mythic creatures, or allegorical scenes — are held in museums and private collections worldwide and continue to fascinate viewers with their technical virtuosity and haunting imagination.
