Peter VanderLaan (B 1950) American, Glass Sculpture. Inscribed "Vanderlaan" and numbered 10/93 on the bottom. Smooth greenish body with sharp peaks at the top.

Peter VanderLaan was born in Santa Fe, New Mexico, in 1950. He developed an early interest in art, and taught himself the basics of glassblowing by the time he was 19. He attended Saint John’s College and went on to work alongside Dale Chihuly. While working as a teaching assistant at Saint John’s he met the artist Mary Beth Bliss, and they wed in 1980, opening Guadalupe Glass Corporation that same year. They eventually began to divide their time between Santa Fe and Mary’s hometown of Chocorua, New Hampshire, crafting multiple works together and teaching at different institutions throughout the United States. Their work is in the Corning Museum of Glass, and Mary specializes in glass etching while Peter produces glassmaking equipment for beginners. Some of their more elaborate pieces have sold for thousands of dollars at auctions, and they have been highly influential to an entire new generation of glass artists who come to Santa Fe just to study and work under them.
