The next book is titled "Peter The Whaler", written by William H. G. Kingston and published by John W. Lovell in New York, with no date, but the first edition was published in 1851, and we believe this came out in the 1880's, because John W. Lovell established his publishing company in New York in 1882 and reorganized the company as United States Book in 1890, and this title should fall in between those two dates. The book has gilt and floral decorations on the spine and the front cover, light floral decorations on the endpapers, an illustrated frontis of a sailing ship caught in the ice, the title page, a two-page Dedicatory Preface, three pages of Contents, a couple of engravings, and 389 pages of text, and it is a book about life and adventures in the Arctic region of the world. William Henry Giles Kingston (1814-1880) was a prolific writer of adventure novels for boys, with his works often taking place at sea or in exotic foreign places, and this thrilling juvenile tale narrates Peter's time at sea whaling in the Arctic. Kingston was English, his first book was published in 1844, and Peter the Whaler was his first book for boys. The book was so successful that Kingston was able to retire from business and devote himself entirely to producing this kind of literature, and over the course of thirty years, he wrote upwards of 130 tales for juveniles. His books were so popular that Robert Louis Stevenson even mentions Kingston in some of his own writings. The book is 8vo. and measures 7 1/2 x 5 1/4 in. wide, it has a tight binding and clean pages and text, with a couple of light brown spots on the frontis illustration and that's it, some light bumps and rubbing on the crown and heel of the spine, some light rubbing along the edges and at the tips, a couple of tips turned in, small corner creases on a few pages, and overall an attractive adventure book for kids about whaling in the cold north. #140 #1527
