Born in 1942, German painter and sculptor Peter Robert Keil grew up in a working-class West Berlin neighborhood, where he developed an early passion for Expressionism and Pablo Picasso. He initially honed his artistic skills under the mentorship of East Berlin painter Otto Nagel, though the construction of the Berlin Wall abruptly severed this relationship. During his subsequent studies at the University of Arts in Berlin, Keil connected with influential contemporary artists like Georg Baselitz and later crossed paths with Joan Miró in Mallorca. Driven by a desire for independence, he spent decades establishing studios across the globe, including in Paris, London, Berlin, and the United States. While his early work captured realistic depictions of big-city life and marginalized figures, his style shifted dramatically in the 1960s toward a more spontaneous approach. Ultimately rising to prominence as one of the "Berliner Neue Wilden" in the early 1980s, Keil became renowned for his dynamic, vibrant, and abstract style blending graffiti elements with emotional, thick brushstrokes.
