Peter Max, a prolific American artist born in Berlin in 1937, rose to fame in the 1960s as a key figure in the psychedelic art movement. His German Jewish family fled to Shanghai in 1938, where his childhood experiences—especially the vibrant colors and Buddhist calligraphy—deeply influenced his art. In 1948, they moved to Haifa, Israel, where Max studied under Viennese Expressionist Professor Hünik. After a brief stay in Paris, where he took drawing classes at the Louvre and discovered Fauvism, the family settled in Brooklyn. There, Max attended Lafayette High School and studied at the Art Students League of New York alongside Norman Rockwell. Known for his vivid colors, bold graphics, and eclectic, cosmic themes, Max captured the spirit of the 1960s across various media—from album covers to airplane designs. His work, blending pop culture, spirituality, and visual wonder, has inspired audiences for decades.
