Peter Layton was born in Prague in 1937, and his family was one of the last to flee the country before war engulfed them. They wound up in Yorkshire, where Layton went to Bradford Art College alongside David Hockney. After two years he transferred to the Central School of Art and Design in London to study ceramics with Gordon Baldwin and Ruth Dockworth, graduating in 1965 and taking a teaching job at the University of Iowa in the United States. There he was exposed to glassblowing and became obsessed, returning to the United Kingdom in 1968 and establishing his own glass studio, the London Glassblowing Workshop, in Rotherhithe. Known as one of the longest continuously working glass artists in the English-speaking world, his pieces, both small and large-scale installations, can now be found around the world.
