Peter Layne Arguimbau (born 1951) is an American painter, art restorer, and classical-art historian best known for his luminous Old Master–inspired marine paintings. Raised in Darien, Connecticut, he grew up in a painter’s studio—grinding pigments for his father by age eight—and later trained extensively at the Art Students League of New York under Frank Mason before continuing his classical studies across Europe. Deeply committed to historical techniques, Arguimbau grinds his own pigments, cooks his own oil-resin mediums, and often works on handmade wood panels, producing artworks noted for their depth, transparency, and craftsmanship. Although he paints portraits, animals, landscapes, and still lifes, he is especially renowned for his detailed maritime scenes, many of which he creates aboard his restored 1935 wooden catboat along the New England coast. His work appears in private, corporate, and royal collections, and he remains active as a painter, lecturer, and gallerist.
