Peter Shelton, Jr. was born in 1927 in Oraibi, Arizona. Also known by his Hopi name Hoyesva, he is widely recognized as a fine artist and an important figure in the history of 20th Century Hopi art. He and his brother, Henry Shelton, began carving and painting at an early age. Their art teacher was the master Fred Kabotie, who taught them how to carve superfine details in one single piece of wood. After serving in the United States Army during the Korean War, Peter was honorably discharged and became a graphic designer in Phoenix, working in many mediums including watercolors, gouache, and oils. In the 1960s he was a jewelry designer for Hopicrafts along with Bernard Dawahoya and Eldon James. In the 1970s Peter created a series of finely carved Kachina dolls, and began collaborating with his brother frequently to produce a more realistic style with greater detail from fluted feathers and deeper textile folds to natural hands and fingernails. He passed away at his home in Phoenix in 1992.
