Peter Gowland (1916–2010) was an American photographer, filmmaker, actor, and inventor best known for his influential work in glamour and pin-up photography during the mid-20th century. Beginning his career in Hollywood as an actor and stuntman, he later became famous for photographing models in natural outdoor settings with bright lighting and an approachable, healthy aesthetic that contrasted with the more formal studio styles of the era. Gowland also designed and manufactured innovative camera equipment, including the “Gowlandflex” twin-lens reflex camera, which became popular among professional photographers. Through his photography books, instructional writing, and magazine work, he helped shape modern glamour photography and inspired generations of portrait and fashion photographers.
