A muddler is a bartender’s tool, used to mash (or “muddle”) fruits, herbs and spices in the bottom of a glass to release their flavor. The tool is shaped like a small baseball bat and must be long enough to touch the bottom of the glass being used. The bottom of a muddler may be textured, toothed, or smooth, depending on the brand and on the item the muddler is intended to impact. Muddlers can be made from plastic, stainless steel, or wood. The origins of the muddler are unknown, likely appearing after the Dark Ages as the mixing of alcoholic beverages began to move beyond the realm of medicine. It comes directly from the pestle, one of two primary tools (the other being the mortar) used since the Stone Age to crush or grind ingredients or substances into a fine paste or powder for preparation to use them in kitchens, laboratories, or pharmacies.
