Persian miniature paintings are small, finely detailed works of art that flourished in Persia (modern-day Iran) from the 13th through the 17th centuries, often as illustrations within illuminated manuscripts or as standalone artworks. These miniatures are renowned for their intricate brushwork, vivid colors, and elaborate compositions, frequently depicting scenes from Persian literature, history, and mythology—such as those found in Ferdowsi’s Shahnameh or Nizami’s Khamsa. While typically stylized rather than naturalistic, Persian miniatures are rich in symbolism and visual storytelling, often featuring flattened perspectives, decorative architecture, and fantastical landscapes. Major centers of production included Tabriz, Shiraz, and Herat, each influencing the stylistic evolution of the form. The tradition bridged artistic influences from Chinese, Islamic, and Central Asian sources and played a foundational role in the development of miniature painting across the broader Islamic world.
