Percival Lafer was born in Brazil in 1936, and obtained a degree in architecture from Mackenzie Presbyterian University in Sao Paulo before returning home to take over his family’s furniture shop after his father passed away unexpectedly. Pivoting into furniture design, he launched the successful MP-1 Armchair in 1961, using steel, rosewood, and thick applications of foam rather than springs. This became a launching pad to many other hand-padded seating lines and allowed him to establish the Lafer MP brand, first gaining international attention by designing a retro-roadster automobile in 1974. Known for luxury, comfort, and acknowledged as one of the “best-kept secrets” of Mid Century Modern design, Lafer continues to produce new products to this day, and began exploring making art and industrial sculptures in the early 2020s.
Minor wear and tear.
