Paule Charpentier (1910–2004) was a pioneering Martinican painter born in Fort‑de‑France into the local Black bourgeoisie. Denied formal study in Paris by her family, she trained privately under Fernand Peux in Martinique. In 1936 she debuted her work during Martinique’s tricentennial celebrations, and alongside her husband Hector Charpentier, she co‑ran two art galleries in Saint‑Pierre and Morne‑Rouge between 1945 and 1950. Her paintings capture vibrant West Indian life—Carnival parades, traditional Bèlè dances, cockfights, and community gatherings—rendered in thick impasto using palette knife techniques, charcoal, embellished oil, and embossed metal varnishes. Deeply influenced by Impressionists and Rembrandt, she sought to reclaim Afro‑Caribbean identity through energetic compositions that convey the spirit of island culture. As one of the few Black female artists of her era on the island, she also taught drawing and is now represented in both private collections and public holdings in Martinique and Europe.
