Paul Kujal (1888-1965) Austrian, Landscape Oil on Canvas. A stunning view of fall foliage next to an inlet with a mostly sandy shoal separating the foreground from the sea in the background. Paul Kujal was born in Vienna, Austria in 1888. His earliest art lessons were with Rudolf von Weyr, and he traveled extensively through Switzerland, Italy, and France honing his craft, primarily painting landscapes in oils on canvas. His works were routinely exhibited in Vienna in the Glaspalast, Segantinibund, and Sezession showcases. Little is known of his life from the beginning of World War I onward, but for a time he painted under the pseudonym Kokler, with his most prolific period of output coming in the 1940s and 50s after the end of World War II. He passed away in his hometown in 1965, and his works have become more and more appreciated since being “rediscovered” by American art historians in the 1990s after the fall of the Iron Curtain.
