Paul Joseph Casale was born in Brooklyn, New York on November 12th, 1962. He showed an early gift for drawing, and his mother encouraged him with a canvas and paintbrush for his sixth birthday. Casale attended the High School of Art and Design in Manhattan, and later went on to study at Pratt Institute where he majored in fine art and minored in illustration. He graduated in 1983, having won a number of grants and awards. During his time at Pratt he developed a post-Impressionist style that hewed closer to photorealism as the years went by, and often focused on street scenes and dynamic fly-on-the-wall views. Much of his art was influenced by his hometown, and he created many scenes of Coney Island. He worked as a children’s book illustrator for two years before becoming an art teacher for the rest of his life. His artistic work was displayed in a number of group shows and juried exhibitions around the New York boroughs over the years. He married his childhood sweetheart, Andrea Nora, on October 4th, 1986, and together they had two children, James and Jessica. The family lived in Cranford, New Jersey, until Paul died suddenly at the age of 51 on June 13th, 2013. The Paul Casale Memorial Scholarship was established in his memory to help students studying the fine arts continue their education after high school, and several retrospective exhibitions of his art have been held since, with the latest at the duCret School of Art in Plainfield, New Jersey in 2018.
