Paul J. Katrich was born in Detroit, Michigan in 1966. As a youth he developed a fascination with antiques, frequently bringing items home after roaming the city and then trying to find out their history at the local library. His discovery of the works of Louis Comfort Tiffany and the Art Nouveau movement when he was thirteen soon led to an interest in painting, and by the time he was in high school he was creating bright canvases influenced by the Hudson River Valley and the French Impressionists nearly every day. He co-founded a band in his senior year called The Mind Readers, writing lyrics and singing lead vocals, and his record collection continued to grow throughout his life, now encompassing over 10,000 discs and tapes. He attended Wayne State University in 1984 and earned a degree in Art History, during which he became enamored with “ten thousand years of ceramic history.” While obtaining a graduate certificate in Archival Administration he first began to experiment with clay, and after serving for three years as a museum curator and teacher of art to elementary school children in the summers he left to become a professional restorer while still honing his ceramic style. Realizing that his myriad interests allowed him to almost perfectly duplicate any genre he wished, he decided to focus on pottery full-time, incorporating many disparate techniques, styles, and mediums into his unique and stunning vases, pots, and other art pieces. His encyclopedic knowledge allowed him to catalog each of his works, and by the early 2000s he had achieved international fame, sometimes compared to George Ohr, the abstract artist from the early 1900s often referred to as “The Mad Potter of Biloxi.” Today he continues to travel and showcase his works at art fairs and exhibitions around the world, with his home base in Sylvan Lake, Michigan, called Katrich Studios, Inc., regularly open to the public and artists interested in collaborating or taking lessons in art and art history.
