Paul Harrie was born in 1951 in North Dakota. As a child he endured multiple harsh winters, spending many hours indoors fascinated by the play of light through the snow and the spectrum of colors that formed. He attended the University of Kansas, obtaining his Bachelors in 1976 in ceramics, before continuing on to the University of California in Los Angeles for his MFA. He became an assistant glass instructor in his second year there, and taught at California State University and UCLA for several years before opening his own studio, Harrie Art Glass, in 1980. He focused on elegant, elastic forms, creating paperweights, vases, bowls, perfume vials and much more in many colors, and had his work exhibited at the Corning Museum of Glass, the Nelson Art Museum in Kansas City, and the Royal Art Gallery in Kyoto, Japan. He worked primarily with the Italian technique of canework, pulling rods of colored glass encased in clear glass over and over, while creating a signature style of his own involving casting pieces of glass mixed with cement. In 2017 Harrie died of prostate cancer, and his studio has continued to operate and flourish under the direction of his wife, Holly.
