Pascal Cucaro was born in Youngstown, Ohio in November 1915, the son of Italian immigrants.  He worked in the circus during his childhood summers, developing a lifelong interest in clowns and circus life. After serving in the European Theatre during World War II, he attended the California School of Fine Arts in San Francisco, then returned to Europe to spend time in France, Spain, and Italy to study art on his own. He became part of the art scene during the “Beat” years in San Francisco’s North Beach section, exhibiting his work at the Black Cat Cafe, The Iron Pot, and The Hungry I, which continues to show his work to this day. A one-man art show held at the Butler Institute of American Art in Youngstown in 1958 was followed by exhibitions in California, Hawaii, and Japan.  He was nominated for the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 1965. He died of pulmonary failure in San Rafael, California in 2004. His circus scenes, street scenes, and what he dubbed “people-people” paintings are characterized by a bold gestural quality, complimented by a thick application of paint.
