Pál Fried (1893–1976) was a Hungarian-born painter best known for his glamorous portraits, dancers, cabaret scenes, and sensuous depictions of women rendered in a fluid, impressionistic style. Trained at the Hungarian Academy of Fine Arts under masters such as Adolf Fényes and later in Paris under Lucien Simon and Fernand Cormon, Fried developed a signature approach marked by vibrant color, soft brushwork, and an emphasis on movement and elegance. After emigrating to the United States in the 1940s, he gained popularity for his paintings of ballerinas, showgirls, and society women, which were widely reproduced and collected. Though sometimes associated with commercial illustration, Fried remained a technically skilled and expressive artist whose work reflects both European academic influence and mid-century American tastes for romantic, decorative imagery.
