The earliest mention of a family called Salviati were glass makers and mosaicists on the island of Murano near Venice, Italy. The company itself was founded by Antonio Salviati, a lawyer from Vicenza in Northern Italy, who provided the means to open a small foundry which quickly grew to include four different families of workers. Records indicate members of the Salviati family were also in London, England working as part of the firm Salviati, Jesurum & Co. of 213 Regent Street in the early 1800s. They renamed the company Salviati and Co. in 1857, and later renamed it again as the Venice and Murano Glass and Mosaic Company in 1866. In 1898 the company moved to new premises at 235 Regent Street and incorporated a set of mosaic armorials along their façade, which are still visible today and were meticulously restored in 1999. During World War II, the Palazzo Salviati on the Grand Canal of Venice was occupied by the Nazis and used as their Headquarters. The head glassmaking family, the Camerinos, fled the Occupation and dispersed to various locations throughout the world, including the United Kingdom, Israel, South Africa, and the United States, taking their techniques and individual specialties with them. In 1971 the House of Salviati collaborated with the Laurel Lamp Company to produce original Murano art glass sculptures employed in table lamps which were featured at the Los Angeles Furnishings Mart. The company was later acquired in 1999 by the French glassmaker conglomerate Arc International. Today they are known as Pauly & C. Compagnia, Venezia, Murano, and continue to produce quality art glass, vases, and more.
