Soapstone (also known as steatite or soaprock) is a talc-schist, which is a type of metamorphic rock. It is composed largely of the magnesium-rich mineral talc, and is produced by dynamothermal reactions which occur in subduction zones, changing rocks by heat and pressure, with influx of fluids but without melting. It has been a carving medium for thousands of years, with Ancient Egyptian scarabs and Native American bowls from the Archaic Period (8000-1000 BC) some of the earliest surviving examples. Due to its extremely good heat retention it is still used today for numerous housewares and decorations, particularly as countertops, floor tiles, and shower bases.
