Pair of Ken Macdonald (20th c.) Metal Sculptures. Features two metal figures standing with spears and shields on round bases. Provenance: Sold: Spring Bull Gallery, Newport Rhode Island, October 03, 2008, Sold in Store. Private estate, Sarasota, Florida. Size: 10 x 10 x 40 in. Largest. #1820 Ken MacDonald studied Industrial Design at the Rhode Island School of Design in the late 1950’s. After a tour of duty in the army, he spent 35 years in product design and management. He began creating welded sculpture in 1998, converting a large workshop on his property into a sculpture barn. Ken’s largest work is a commissioned 10 ft tall stainless steel outdoor piece installed in East Greenwich, RI. Other stainless steel works include an outdoor fountain, which can be seen in Wickford, Rhode Island, at St. Paul’s Episcopal church Meditation Garden. “Found Object” works, such as the Time Machine, are always happening in the barn. Hundreds of old recycled parts morph into unique one of a kind pieces. He likes to use a wide variety of materials, exploring spatial relationships, texture, and treatments that enhance the uniqueness of each material. Whimsey and movement often play a part in these pieces, many of which now decorate properties from coast to coast. Recycled materials are used as much as possible, including salvaged stainless steel, iron, copper, glass, etc., in line with his philosophy of recycling everything possible. His next series will be a number of pieces combining steel, wood & stone, focusing on their textural qualities. Ken lives & works in North Kingstown, Rhode Island, and is an artist member of the following organizations: Providence Art Club, Wickford Art Assoc., New Haven Paint & Clay Club, Newport Art Museum, and Spring Bull Gallery, Newport.
