Pair of Hurricane Glass Lamp Covers.
Condition: Overall very good.
Size: 9 1/2 x 9 1/2 x 20 1/2 in.
As the name suggests, hurricane lamps came about because of the need for unbelievably resilient lighting implements that could withstand any weather conditions, both to prevent the flame from being extinguished or the glass surrounding it from being broken. The style is still in use, usually a cylindrical shape with a bulging middle section and a very lightly curved upper and lower section, a design made to disrupt the flow of heavy winds from reaching the flame at the bottom while still distributing the light well throughout. This can then be attached to a traditional oil-filled bottom, or even a simple candleholder. Maritime museums, primarily in the Americas and Europe, often display hurricane lamps from throughout history, often imbued with an almost mythical quality due to their supposedly single-handedly saving ships crews, villages, or lighthouse keepers from dying in Storms of the Century. Many regional variations exist, and there are still companies such as Villeroy & Boch and Pottery Barn that routinely produce and sell hurricane lamps, although since the transition from kerosene and gas to electric lighting implements they are much less commonly made, and are often collected as antiques.
Overall very good.
