Pablo Picasso (1891-1973) was an artistic prodigy whose early career was marked by the distinct Blue and Rose periods before he co-founded Cubism. After being influenced by African artifacts, he revolutionized modern art through formal experimentation and remained a prolific creator in France throughout both World Wars. His personal life was famously complex, involving two marriages and numerous high-profile affairs with women who served as his muses, including Marie-Thérèse Walter and Françoise Gilot. Picasso used his global platform for political expression, most notably in his anti-war masterpiece Guernica, which became a symbol of resistance against Francisco Franco’s regime. In his later years, he expanded his repertoire into ceramics and film while simultaneously embracing and satirizing his status as a wealthy international celebrity. By the time of his death in 1973 he had fundamentally redefined most artistic standards and movements of the 20th Century, and remains one of the most influential and highly valued artists in history.
